Drupal

Drupal is a free and open source content management framework (CMF) based on PHP and a variety of databases most commonly MySQL. It has many features of the more popular WordPress CMS, including a plug-in architecture and a modular template system.

Drupal has been hit with numerous hacks, but the development community has a fairly robust tracking and notification system, alerting webmasters of Drupal sites to security exploits that have been discovered.

Among the technical staff we have worked with over the years, by far Drupal is fovored and considered a better framework for developing custom solutions. From a usability standpoint, however, Drupal has long been criticized for the quirkiness of its interface for content management. There is a significantly longer learning curve for non-technical users of a Drupal website when compared to WordPress.

The PHP and database query framework within Drupal has been criticized in recent years as well. Drupal attempts to accelerate page delivery so web sites perform faster, but the process they use to create a cache of queries taxes web servers in other ways. Not all web hosts will welcome a Drupal framework on shared web resources.

Every business is unique. The products they produce, the attributes that make them valuable, the services they provide, the industries they serve, partners who they work with all of these unique factors need to be highlighted and brought to the forefront in a corporate web site.

The primary challenges businesses face when adopting Drupal as a CMF for their website, is that Drupal is not natively designed to make product management effective. Customization is required for most business uses.

An effective Drupal website is monitored closely for hacks and code exploits. Backups must be performed regularly, and tight controls over when, where and how plugins and widgets are added are essential. There are thousands of plugins and widgets available many for free or available at a lower cost than developing a custom solution, however your website security is only as secure as the code used in the weakest widget. Your webmaster should test and be on the lookout for malware exploits related to the plugins and plugin developers related to your website.
